DIVEMASTER
In embarking on the Divemaster Course a trainee undertakes to learn the skills and techniques that will prepare him to take responsibility for other divers. As an aide to an instructor, a Divemaster works with students at all levels and of varying abilities, taking charge of groups of divers in training, while the instructor carries out individual instruction. As a professional dive guide, the duties are not only to prepare the group for a particular dive site, and to show essential and interesting aspects of it, but to take responsibility for the general safety and behaviour of individual group members.
These are serious but rewarding responsibilities that require very specialised skills and knowledge, and should not be taken lightly. From this level upwards, students will be expected to call upon and apply all of their acquired skills in a very different way - in a more responsible way. With this grounding, students can progress to Assistant Instructor and PADI Instructor levels.
Entry requirement for the Divemaster course are:
- PADI Advanced Open Water certification (or equivalent from another organization)
- PADI Rescue Diver certification (or equivalent from another organization)
- Medical clearance signed by a physician
- 20 logged dives (60 logged dives for certification)
- Minimum 18 years of age
In addition to learning dive leadership in the classroom and through independent study sessions, you will complete demanding water skills and stamina exercises in confined and open water. There will be training exercises to test organizational and problem solving abilities.
The complete course will take approximately 21 days.
A certified PADI Divemaster can do the following:
- Work at local dive centres, on liveaboard dive boats, yachts
- Assist PADI instructors with students
- Lead PADI Scuba Divers on guided dive tours
- Teach and certify PADI Skin Divers
- Teach PADI Discover Snorkelling programs
- Conduct PADI Scuba Review programs for certified divers
- Lead certified divers on Discover Local Diving experiences
- Teach Emergency First Response programs after successful completion of Emergency First Response Instructor course
